I am back to bring you information on how the relaxation technique worked for me. After finding a quiet place (which is hard considering my two little girls), I laid down hit the play button and closed my eyes. I loved the background music/bell sound in the beginning. The sound seemed to relax me some, but then the man began talking and it through me off. Instead of just relaxing and listening to the sound I concentrated on what he was saying and wondered if I was doing the relaxation technique correctly or should I have been doing it different. It just definitely through me for a loop. So as he talked my mind began drifting and instead of relaxing I had numerous thoughts going through my mind.
I do hot yoga with my husband and if you follow yoga you know that it is meant to be done in quiet surroundings with some music in the background and the instructor quietly explaining what to do next. This type of thing relaxes me. I am not sure why the yoga instructor's voice is able to calm me and focus on what needs to be done, but the man on this recording just did not have the same effect and I am not sure why.
I know this is only the first technique and I am hoping I can find one that truly helps. I am definitely looking forward to the next one.
Hey Tiffani! I completely agree with you about the exercise we tried for class. I just couldn't get into it with the man's voice interrupting my thoughts. I tried! I did better with it when I played out my own relaxation plan in my head...I'm looking forward to future exercises that might work for me as well!
ReplyDeleteYoga is a great method for relaxation for me also! I think it's great that you found something that works so well for you!
Tiffani,
ReplyDeleteI just could not help but laugh all the way through. I was trying very hard to just relax....then the guy would start talking yet again...My thoughts were how am I supposed to relax when he is gabbing the whole time? I know that he was trying to give instructions to relax each part of the body...I had them placed my own disc in and it was much better..just the music and I fared much better! LOL
Hi Tiffani,
ReplyDeleteThere are so many kinds of relaxation exercises - what you're describing in yoga class is a really great one. The one we're doing in class is called "Autogenic training", very close to a technique called "progressive relaxation". It was designed to teach people how they can change what's happening in their bodies - where the blood is flowing in this case - with their mind. So relaxation exercise might be the wrong term, since it really does take focusing your mind. Try it again with this in mind :), see what happens.
Happy Wellness!

Tiffani, although this was my first experience with a relaxation or meditation technique I liked it. Although it was hard for me to like you concentrate on what I was supposed to be doing. I have never been a firm believer on this sort of thing, and I don’t know why. I have heard of the many different types of yoga and have always thought that it was just a bunch of people in stretchy pants doing positions like the downward dog and the other that you see on TV programs. However my wife pregnant with our third child started doing pregnancy yoga to help her with mobility and being able to keep up with the two little ones we have now. I am now seriously thinking about joining her in a session. Wish me luck. Sam
